Santee National Wildlife Refuge
Stretching along the northern shore of Lake Marion, this 15,000-acre refuge offers protected habitat for migratory birds, deer, and even American alligators. It's a prime destination for birdwatching, hiking, and nature photography. Santee Indian Mound & Fort Watson Located within the refuge, this mound is one of the oldest Native American ceremonial sites in the region, dating back over 1,000 years. During the Revolutionary War, it was repurposed by the British as Fort Watson, later captured by American forces led by Francis Marion - the "Swamp Fox"
